Using Science and Technology to Connect with Consumers

Farmers can strengthen connections with consumers by talking about science and technology on their farms, according to Paul Spooner with the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance. “Agriculture can bridge the gap between the acceptance of innovation that is a part of consumers’ everyday lives with the science and technology happening on today’s farms and ranches,” Spooner said. Talking about your “SMART Farm” and technology used to enhance animal welfare and sustainability is a great place to begin, as most consumers understand the meaning of smart phones, smart homes, etc.

Spooner also recommended linking technology to sustainability on the farm or ranch when possible, as eight in 10 consumers associate water, soil, air and habitat with sustainable practices. Spooner talked about USFRA initiatives and research at a training session held by the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Promotion & Education Committee in Washington, D.C., for Farm Bureau members and state staff.
