According to “Trump Picks Longtime Friend of Beijing as U.S. Ambassador to China,” a Reuters article, “President-elect Donald Trump will nominate Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad as the next U.S. ambassador to China, choosing a longstanding friend of Beijing after rattling the world’s second largest economy with tough talk on trade and a telephone call with the leader of Taiwan.”

In closing the article, Reuters noted that, Branstad, 70, visited China most recently as the leader of a trade mission that made stops in Beijing and Hebei in November. “He will be ‘somebody who clearly understands agriculture representing U.S. interests’ in China, said Dale Moore, executive director for public policy at the American Farm Bureau Federation.”
